A Curriculum for Excellence

As part of our drive towards A Curriculum for Excellence, we have created three display boards to celebrate learning in literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing across the curriculum. Here are the boards for this term:

Glenshee 2011: leo's legendary crispie cakes...

It's becoming a Cedars tradition that Leo makes us rice crispy cakes for our residential trips. Last night we managed to polish off the whole box at supper time! One of the families staying at the centre joined us when they saw what we were eating!!

Glenshee 2011: Good morning!

Day 2 has begun! Most of us slept very well after quite a long and busy day. Some light snow fell overnight and we awoke to clear skies- looks like it will be a great day on the slopes...

Waiting for breakfast:

Glenshee ski trip day 1:

We're back for our second visit to Compass Christian Ski Centre, a great, welcoming activity centre based at the foot of the Glenshee slopes. Last year we arrived to heavy snowfall. This year the slopes are covered but thankfully the roads are clear!

We arrived in time for a quick lunch and then left with all our gear for the slopes, which are a five minute drive away. The pupils divided into skiing and boarding groups depending on ability- and all their hard work at Bellahouston during last terms broader curriculum has paid off!

They have had a fantastic afternoon, and are now unpacking and warming up. Tea time soon!

Keep an eye on this blog through the week for updates and photos...

Assembly

In Primary, our Wednesday assemblies have focussed on race and so far we have heard about Martin Luther King and Steve Biko. These were two men who fought for freedom for black people. It has been very interesting to find out about them.

We had a great after school rehearsal for the Narnia production today - everyone worked well and were really getting into character. It is going to be great!

Burns Lunch

Everyone in the secondary enjoyed a delicious Burn's lunch on Tuesday prepared by Jacqueline. Ailie in S4 piped in the Haggis and then we had some excellent recitations of selected Burns poetry by S1/2 pupils before tucking in - YUM!

Thanks very much to Mrs Creighton and Jacqueline for organising it, it was a great success.

Christine's visit

This term we are very fortunate to have Christine in school. She is here for work experience from James Watt College. She spent today having a tour of the school and getting stuck in to lots of work in the school office.
We are all grateful to have her between now and Easter!

S1/2 Fitness Programmes

This morning S1/2 visited the Fitness Gym in Greenock Sports Centre. They were shown how to use all the machines and then were given out a Fitness Record where they had to record their times and weights for various machines. From this an individual fitness programme has been designed in order to improves their fitness. The pupils will record their results every week.

Christmas Shopping Day!

Today we are going to Glasgow Christmas shopping with S2-5.
It is a Cedars tradition but not normally this cold!
We have enlisted the help of some former pupils to go round with groups. Hopefully we'll come back with lots of great presents for mum and dad!

After school clubs

This week was the last of a very successful term of after school clubs. Activities ranged from Christmas crafts to board games to basketball and the senior choir!

Our Danish Friends

Many thanks to our Danish friends for the beautiful gifts you sent us for Christmas - the heart in particular is lovely and we really appreciate it!

Play Tickets

We have very few tickets left for the Primary Nativity Play - only 3 for Friday night and a few for Monday afternoon and evening.

Please note that tickets will not be available at the door as space is very restricted and we will not be able to squeeze anyone in!

If you find you can come but don't have a ticket on the day please phone the school and see if any are available - sometimes people have to cancel at the last minute and tickets are returned.

Thank You

Monday 13th December

Although the weather is still set to be fairly wintery this week, we are intending to run a full working timetable all week. The bus will be running as normal. We will update this blog if this changes at any point.

Weather update - Tuesday

The school is open from 9-3 as usual. Driving conditions are treacherous in and around the West End. Please make your own decision about whether travel is necessary and safe today. The school bus will not be running today.

A hero...

Special thanks to Jacqueline who runs the lunchtime cafe in school - she has made it to school every day despite the snow... even though she had to bring the soup on a sledge to get it here! Just what we needed to warm us all up!

SNOW!

It has been an unusual week for the secondary at Cedars School... the pupils that have made it through the snow and huge icicles (73 cm) have been doing revision work, consolidation, research tasks and experimenting with some new apps on their iPads... (I think the favourites are digital pottery, animation and Angry Birds...)

Senior pupils should check their email as some staff have been emailing homework tasks.
