Pizza perfection!

P1-4 had great fun making their own lunch today. After rolling out dough and piling on their favourite toppings they gave them to Mr Parkinson (Courtney's dad) to bake. The results were delicious.

A big thank you to Mr Parkinson from Heather's Deli for the time and effort he put in today.

Thanks also to Miss Boyle for helping out this week.

A grand day out!

With the all the older pupils away in Paris, the rest of the school made the not-quite-so-long journey to Battery Park in Gourock!

The sky was blue, the sun shone and we all had a great time!

Exams, exams, exams...

With only 3 exams left to go, study leave is drawing to a close for S3/4 and S5.  All the exams seem to have gone smoothly in terms of organisation - for this we thank Dr Rankin and Mr Creighton as well as our invigilators- Jean Brooks, Graham McKenzie Smith and Ian Lundie. Thanks also to all the primary staff and pupils for being so quiet during the exam times.

Although S5 will be able to reap the rewards of all their studying and enjoy a care free summer without the thought of returning to school, S3/4 will be working hard again next week as some of them embark upon work experience placements. After that they will return to school for the last few weeks of term.

Information Evening Report

Thank you to all who attended our information evening on Wednesday night. The evening was a great success. We enjoyed meeting interested visitors to the school, some of whom have children they would like to send and some who were just keen to see the school and look at some of the work we have been doing.
Special thanks again go to Peter and Jaqueline from 'Heather's Delicatessen' who provided tea, coffee and delicious cakes.
We were pleased to have the chance to meet with those who came and enjoy showcasing some of the pupils work displayed around the school.
There is also the chance to see us 'in action' tomorrow (Friday) as we have an open day from 10am - 2pm. People are free to come to the school and have a tour round to see us 'at work.'

Wimbledon 2009!

This year, as in years past, Cedars school will be sending a number of children on the trip of a lifetime to the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon. It is a fantastic experience for tennis enthusiasts and we are looking for four interested children aged 12 and over to travel down to the middle weekend of the competition.
The trip is organised in conjunction with Tennis Inverclyde and also includes two members of Cedars School staff!
We look forward to the trip. Watch this space for details of our lucky tennis travellers!

There will be a short presentation on the work of the school, structure of the curriculum and the philosophy of the school and plenty of time to ask questions and look round the building. There will also be tea, coffee and cakes!
There is no charge for entry to the information evening which will begin at 7.30 and finish around 9.15.
A warm invitation is extended to parents, friends and family members to come and join us for what we hope will be a very enjoyable evening.

We will be saying farewell to Carol Dutch in June this year as she and her family head out to Saudi Arabia. Both Carol and her husband David will begin teaching in the International School in Riyadh in August.

Though we are very sorry to lose Carol and will miss her greatly in the school, we are also very excited for the whole family as they look towards an exciting time ahead.

And of course we are looking forward to seeing them back on holiday at Christmas time.

The choir have been busy practicing for the 10th anniversary night. Here is a taster of some of the songs...

P3/4 Sign language

For the 10th Anniversary night, we are performing the song "Can you hear me?" by Bob Chilcot. It is a song about a deaf child's experiences of the world and of communicating them to others. A small group will be singing the song and P3/4 girls will be signing it at the performance.

I have recorded the first verse with signing for the children to work on at home. I have recorded myself doing it with the opposite hand to what it should be so that the children just need to copy exactly what they see and do not need to reverse it themselves!

Here are the words to help you:

I look around me as I grow
I'd like to tell you all I know
I see life with all it's energy
The city streets, the rush of time
This is my world, it's where I like to be
So much to see, so much to find
I sometimes sit and wait a while
I see the sun, it makes me smile

Can you see it?
Can you see it too?
Can you see it?
Can you see it too?

I will record the remaining 2 verses in due course.

Good luck!

Inverclyde Kidney Support Group Competition

Over the past few weeks P7 and S1 have been participating in a competition set by Inverclyde Kidney Support Group.
The group, which offers support to people in Inverclyde who are affected by kidney disease, set us a competition to design a poster to advertise their monthly meetings. P7 and S1 did this in their computing periods and the results are just in!
The support group will display the poster in various locations throughout the area. The winners will also receive gift vouchers and a framed copy of the poster.
So.... congratulations to.... Melissa McNeal and Nico Medinelli, who together designed the winning entry.
Well done!

Mr J :)

P2 have a New Home!!

Cries of 'oooo' and 'aaa' reverberated through the attic this morning as Mrs Jewell welcomed Primary 2 to their new class room! Their room in the attic has been widened, repainted, and has a lovely new carpet. Ecosse Joinery have done a super job, and Mr Mckenzie is painting a surprise on the new walls in the corridor!

Easter Service

We held our end of term Easter service on Friday 3rd April - it was a lovely service and a great way to end a successful, hardworking term. Thank you to everyone who supported it.

Pupils from P1 - S4 performed an Easter play called "Jerusalem Alive" which they had helped to write as well as rehearse at our after school drama club. The play was written as a news report looking at the events surrounding Easter and interviewing eye-witnesses to what had happened. The play was a great success and everyone who took part was super!

Charities Day

On Thursday 2nd April we had a Charities day in Cedars School for P1 - S5. Susie Hope from the Mercy Ships organisation came and told us of their work in Africa and Kate Copstick, who is the Aunt of Finlay and Lamorna Brown, told us of work she is involved in with children in Kenya. We also had Elspeth Lyons speaking with the primary department about the Scottish Aid to Eastern Europe charity. It was a very interesting and informative day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children. Thanks to all who took part!

On the Friday morning we held a Fund raising breakfast in aid of the Mercy Ships work which was provided by "Heather Delicatessen". Pupils and staff alike thoroughly enjoyed a tasty start to the day and we raised over £200! Thanks to everyone for their generous donations and thanks to Mrs Parkinson and the staff at "Heathers Delicatessen" for a delicious breakfast! Kate Copstick also held a fund - raising stall at the Easter service selling crafts made by the children she works with in Kenya.
