Primary 3/4 are missing Mr Atkinson whilst he looks after his new baby but they are working very hard! This morning they have learnt how to use an atlas and then used their new skills to find and label Roman towns on a map...
Congratulations to Owen and Alison Atkinson who had their second baby daughter early on Wednesday morning. She is called Bethany Faith Atkinson and was 8 lb 2oz. Mother and baby are doing well and are home from hospital.
Mrs Speirs is doing baking with us for the next six weeks. The pupils who have chosen this as their next BC topic will learn some of the basic skills for baking and will also be making a variety of Christmassy treats!
We are starting with delicious Christmas shortbread today.
We have greased our baking sheets...
Weighed and whisked the butter...
Weighed and sieved the flour
We've rolled our mixture on a floured work top...
And used cookie cutters to make shaped biscuits...
Then after the Great BC WashUp- the biscuits came out of oven... YUM!!!

This evening at Cedars we are having a first aid training course. For many staff it is a refresher course and useful for all of us to keep up our skills.
Today in drama we began by creating some still images in groups. Pupils had to be quite creative as they only had 10 seconds to create each image:
We also explored some moral dilemmas and worked on persuasive language using an alley debate technique:
Lastly, we continued to develop the moral dilemmas by focussing on the thoughts and conscience of the characters. Pupils created a powerful chorus of voices to represent the character's thoughts. They each had a chance to take on the role of the character and hear the chorus.
Angie Sword from the RYA spoke to Senior Assembly this morning. She encouraged them to give sailing a try, and gave them some ideas for getting started. Angie spoke about the Olympics and how RYA are using the events in London to encourage more people to sail.
S1 - S3 drama students enjoyed an excellent trip to the Kings theatre in Glasgow to see Slava's Snowshow. The show is an outstanding mix of visual imagery, music, mime and audience engagement by true 'clown' artists. Here are some pictures and a video to give you a flavour of the show...
Thank you to all who supported our 1st ever digital art exhibition today. It was a super success with over 90 paintings sold!
Middle school pupils were excellent at welcoming visitors, showing them round and demonstrating different apps. They were a credit to the school- well done!
I will send home as many of the purchased paintings as possible with the relevant children before we break up for the holidays. Some paintings will have to be reordered over the holidays but will be ready for as soon as we come back.
If you have bought a painting and it has not arrived by Tuesday 1st November, please do not hesitate to email me as it is possible that there may have been the odd mishap with our ordering system at busy times! jo@cedars.inverclyde.sch.uk
If you couldn't make the exhibition but would like to order a painting, you can view most of the exhibits on our flickr site. You can access it from the page that lists all the blogs on the school website.
Please email me at if you want to order any paintings and I will arrange it. jo@cedars.inverclyde.sch.uk
Middle school pupils were making final preparations for the digital art exhibition today. There are over 160 paintings by pupils and staff. Everyone is welcome to come and see the exhibition and learn how to use some of the art apps. It is from 10 - 2 on Tuesday 11th in the new extension hall at Struthers Memorial Church / the New Dawn Coffee shop.
Middle school pupils will be running an exhibition of digital art on Tuesday 11th October from 10 am - 2 pm. The exhibition includes work from P1 - S5 and will be held in the New Dawn Coffee Shop top hall. The hall can be accessed from Jamaica Lane or through the coffee shop on West Stewart Street. Pupils will be giving demonstrations of how to use different art apps on the iPad, paintings will be for sale and all visitors will get a free tea or coffee voucher for the New Dawn Coffee Shop.
All are very welcome to come along for a look round.
Yesterday we held an open day for parents and pupils and friends. It was a tremendous success. There were a large number of visitors to the school who took advantage of the chance to see round the building, have a coffee and delicious cake and take part in a number of themed workshops.
The reaction from those who came was universally positive and many people complimented the senior and primary choirs who sang at the end. Many thanks to all involved in making the day such a success.
Welcome to Cedars School of Excellence 'Home Blog'.
The home blog follows on from the extremely successful blogs that have been running in school over the past three years. We presently run a blog for each of the primary classes and two faculty blogs in the secondary department. These are ongoing and are a great way to keep parents, grandparents and friends updated with what is going on.
There are however, occasions and events which affect the whole school such as health fairs, sports championships, elections, whole school visits etc. These will be reported on the home blog.
Please visit the blogs and continue to give us encouraging feedback on all we are doing in Cedars School!
