The seagull egg has hatched!

The seagull that has nested on the chimney outside Miss Rukins room has been circling her nest this afternoon- guarding the new chick that has hatched!

We can see one speckled chick but suspect another egg is yet to hatch which the mother keeps sitting on...

The spectacle has provided welcome distractions for S3 Modern Studies!

Co-operative Learning - Teeth

On Friday, P2-7 were learning about teeth and how to keep them clean and healthy. P3 made a short presentation of what we had learned at the Science Centre on Thursday at the "Know your Gnashers" workshop.

The classes were split into different groups and their task was to write a song about their teeth to a famous tune. Some were better than others!

Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Wellbeing

In line with ACfE we have been looking at ways of incorporating literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing into all areas of the curriculum as well as ways to record this.

We have selected three projects, one for each of the areas, and have created some lively displays in the entrance hall of the school. On them you can see some of the things the pupils have been doing in different subjects and how the areas of literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing are being addressed.

James Watt College Partnership

Pupils in S2 who have chosen to do Skills for Work courses at the James Watt College next year were meeting the college staff and undergoing interviews today.

Pupils have applied to do a range of courses including construction, engineering, hospitality, childcare and sport. The pupils were able to learn more about the courses on offer and to ask questions about them - it all seemed to go well.

Co-operative Learning Afternoon

In our co-operative learning afternoon P2-7 were learning about bullying. The pupils were split into mixed age groups and were given the task for creating a at about bullying. The group then performed these plays to the rest of the pupils.

Post election analysis

S1 and some of S2 spent time today looking at the results of the election and how to display the data effectively. Nicol suggested using pie charts. We found that pie charts (shown by Jennifer) were useful for showing the share each party got. In particular it was easy to see if the party with the largest share got a majority. However, they weren't useful for analysing detail and comparing the results in different areas. Daria suggested using a bar graph (shown by Euan) to compare the results of the Cedars School election with those of Inverclyde and Scotland. This proved effective for showing the differences in results.

Pupils extended their knowledge of data handling, using spreadsheets and how our political system works!

Election Day

The Higher modern studies class are running the school's mock election today. Pupils are coming to the GP Room and voting for one of the Inverclyde constituency candidates. At the end of the day we will post our results on the Hansard MockVote website. Our results will be collated with other participating schools' and published next week!

Everyone has been involved in our whole school project on the election. Posters and leaflets have been made in S1 and S2 English, policies and electoral systems examined in Computing, games played on the MP for a day website, and lots more! Can you spot the rosettes the primary classes have been making?

Mr Creighton will use our school results in his statistics lessons tomorrow, and we are all looking forward to seeing how our results compare with the national results!

S3-5 will soon come to vote and then we can begin to count...

Co-Operative Learning 2

This afternoon P2-7 are having our second co-operative learning afternoon. These are a great opportunity for children and staff to become familiar with co-operative learning techniques and strategies and learn to solve problems in groups. All these lessons are themed around Health and Wellbeing outcomes. Today we are designing and playing exciting playground games. We are fortunate to have a nice day so we can go outside to test our games! Great fun and active learning for all!!

Golf at Gourock - Day 1

Today we are at Gourock Golf Club with S1/2 Broader Curriculum. We are working with David Watters, the resident professional at Gourock. Today, for many of the boys we are becoming familiar with holding a club and the feel of hitting some balls.

Some of our boys are already keen golfers, and for them, they are getting the chance to help teach others and play some holes themselves. All in all,
a great start.

Co-Operative Learning 1

This term, on Friday afternoons, P2-7 are joining together for some co-operative learning afternoons. Each of the afternoons will involve the children in taking various roles within groups, learning to respect and value each other's ideas and opinions and also participate on some important activities based on health and wellbeing.
Day 1 was based on making healthy sandwiches and was a great success.
After and initial 'getting to know you' ice breaker the children formed their groups for the later activities. Each child was given a sticker with the name of a healthy filling for a sandwich. They then had to make a group comprising all the available fillings. This was glorious mayhem for 5 minutes as we all found our groups but quickly settled into some great work. Each group made a healthy sandwich, displayed it for the 'judges' and came up with a fantastic name to advertise their sandwich. Examples included; the 'Valhalla Salad', and the 'Leaning Tower Sandwich'. Great fun was had by all!
Here are some photos of the afternoon.

Getting Ready for Golf

Today we were visited by Derek Watters, resident golf professional at Gourock Golf Club. Derek showed us a presentation on the club and talked about the basics of golf. The children had opportunities to ask questions and get psyched up for next week wen we will start our first week of tuition at the club. Let's just hope the weather is as sunny as today!

Welcome back!

Welcome back to all our pupils for the summer term 2010. We came back to a new playground layout with a quiet garden area and new playground games for the primary.

All our teachers made it back from their various holidays... although Mrs Speirs, Dr Rankin, Miss Oakley and Miss Black had to revive the spirit of Dunkirk as they battled overland from Paris to ensure they made it back for Monday morning, 9:00 am. Their thanks to Mr Speirs who drove down and rescued them from Brighton Peir!

However, some of our pupils are still stranded on the continent and we look forward to welcoming them back soon.

All heads down for S3 -S5 pupils who will soon be sitting exams in various subjects.

End of term!

We had a super Easter service today to close the term for the holidays. There was an excellent drama by the after school drama club, a beautiful choral piece from the after school choir, some fabulous "Clapping of de Hands" by P1 - 3 and the debut of the guitar group - well done to all who took part and many thanks to all who worked hard to prepare for it.

Many thanks to all parents and friends who came along to support us at the service and for the Easter greetings and gifts you have sent us. We wish you all a very happy and restful Easter and look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed, on Monday 19th April at 9:oo am.
